CHAPTER 18
With the player's shout, some of the people in the church were shaken, and their defense quickly showed cracks. Combined with the lack of numerical advantage and independent battles between teams, they were scattered and soon there were deaths and injuries.
As a result, the number of zombies in the church increased, and the remaining players realized the situation was unfavorable and quickly escaped through broken windows.
Only then did Tang Yu and the other two slip into the church. At this point, there were less than five players left in the main hall. With no human threat, Tang Yu followed the stairs and cautiously explored the upper floor.
The second floor consisted of a corridor in the shape of the character "回" [meaning "return" or "go back"]. It was hollow in the middle, providing a view of the ground floor and a large cross directly ahead. On the other side of the corridor were small rooms, presumably used for storage.
There had been battles here as well, and a few freshly turned zombies were wandering around. When they saw Tang Yu and Jin Ye, they briefly averted their gaze but quickly turned back, fixating their eyes on Xiaoli behind the two.
Tang Yu held her knife across in front of her, revealing a row of white teeth, adopting a threatening expression.
The zombies on the opposite side, however, remained still, perhaps because they hadn't received instructions from the Zombie King.
Tang Yu softened her intimidating expression and tentatively asked, "Where is your leader?"
But the zombies didn't respond, clearly unable to communicate with her.
Tang Yu surveyed the second floor and noticed that on the far west side, there was another staircase. She remembered that this location led to the tower.
Just as Tang Yu was about to make a move, Jin Ye grabbed her and quickly slipped into a small storage room.
In a low voice, Jin Ye asked, "Are you going to meet the Zombie King just like that? Have you thought about what to do after meeting it?"
Tang Yu blinked. "Join it."
"Huh?"
"If we can't defeat it, then we join it. If we can defeat it, then kill it." Tang Yu said. "We've come this far, and we need to trigger something to complete the mission. But in my opinion, we can't defeat it, so we should consider joining it as a priority."
Jin Ye was taken aback, but Tang Yu's words did make sense. She had already thought about it beforehand.
However, Jin Ye asked, "What about the Xiaoli?"
"Let's try to persuade the Zombie King to recruit Xiaoli too."
"Do you think that's possible?"
"Let's give it a try. If Xiaoli is recruited, it won't have to eat raw meat anymore. Xiaoli can cook for us."
Jin Ye: ...
Despite the commotion, at this stage, the three of them couldn't give up on the mission. Regardless, they had to face it head-on.
Jin Ye had considered leaving Xiaoli here to hide, but its blood would attract the Zombie King. There was a possibility that it would be eaten by the Zombie King before Tang Yu and Jin Ye found it.
With no better option at the moment, the three of them cautiously moved towards the direction of the tower.
After the Zombie King entered the church, it disappeared, and Tang Yu speculated that it might have gone to the top of the tower.
After all, she observed that this Zombie King liked to stand at high places.
The interior of the tower was very narrow, with only a spiral wooden staircase extending upwards. The three of them climbed in a single file, with Tang Yu at the front, the small fox protected in the middle, and Jin Ye at the rear. If they encountered any danger, they could react immediately.
However, unexpectedly, after climbing for about ten minutes, they hadn't encountered any other zombies or humans.
Soon, they arrived at a small platform that resembled a room. On the platform, there were some large gears, and through the windows, they could see a huge clock on the outer wall. This was the room where the clock's mechanism was placed, but the clock had long stopped.
The spiral staircase did not end on this platform, it continued to extend outward, seemingly leading directly to the top of the tower.
Tang Yu stepped onto the platform cautiously, carefully surveying the room. The lighting was dim, and the huge machinery cast many dark corners. Behind the stationary gears, it was pitch black, making it unclear what was hidden there.
A sense of danger tightly gripped the hearts of the three individuals, causing them to unconsciously hold their breaths.
Tang Yu gripped her knife and walked towards the shadows behind the gears, while Jin Ye and Xiaoli held their guns, ready to attack at any moment.
After taking two steps, Tang Yu suddenly stopped. Song Lengzhu's information flashed in her mind once again: "The Zombie King won't escape, only attack."
It wouldn't be hiding here.
In an instant, the wooden staircase leading to the top of the tower made a slight creaking sound, and Tang Yu immediately turned around and pounced towards Jin Ye and Xiaoli.
A dark figure came through the air and directly lunged at the three of them.
