CHAPTER 44
"Qin, Qin..."
Everyone present was petrified, and it took a while before the first person regained their senses and hastily bowed down, stuttering, "S-Senior, hello!"
"Senior Qin."
"Emperor Qin."
"Film Empress Qin."
A few scattered voices echoed one after another, as faint as a mosquito's whispers.
Even You Mingxuan, who had been the most arrogant just moments ago, couldn't help but gulp and lower his gaze, restraining the urge to retreat.
Whether it was his imagination or not, when Qin Yinong took off her sunglasses, she seemed to deliberately give him a cold glance.
Qin Yinong leisurely enjoyed the fear of her junior colleagues before casually rubbing the frame of her sunglasses with her thumb. She nonchalantly swept her gaze over everyone, releasing an invisible pressure, and with her unique languid tone, she asked, "Seems lively here. What are you all playing?"
The group exchanged glances, and You Mingxuan mustered up some courage and whispered, "We were discussing inviting our colleagues to have a meal together."
"Is that so?" Qin Yinong said with a smile that wasn't quite a smile. "She doesn't seem very willing, from what I can see."
Tang Ruoyao's mind went blank. Qin Yinong's sudden appearance on the set had a greater impact on her than anyone else. Why was she here? What was she here for? How coincidental that she happened to witness this situation?
How much of what she said did Qin Yinong hear? What would she think? Would she be displeased with her?
You Mingxuan's harassment became an insignificant matter in comparison. Tang Ruoyao's mind was preoccupied with Qin Yinong, speculating on how she would react.
When Qin Yinong spoke, she glanced at Tang Ruoyao and gave her a meaningful look. She was so obvious in trying to help her out of the situation. If Tang Ruoyao had any sense, she should have taken the opportunity to slip away under her cover, avoiding this group of people. However, to Qin Yinong's surprise, Tang Ruoyao's expression was evasive, and she didn't even look at her.
Qin Yinong: "..."
It was ironic that Tang Ruoyao was thought to be clever and quick-witted, yet she dropped the ball at a critical moment.
Qin Yinong sighed inwardly but maintained a gentle smile on her face. She kindly asked You Mingxuan, "Where is your director Lin?"
You Mingxuan discreetly glanced at the absent-minded Tang Ruoyao, a hint of unwillingness flashing in his eyes. He had planned for nearly a month to find this opportunity, only for Qin Yinong to disrupt the situation.
You Mingxuan gritted his teeth in secret, put on a smile, and replied, "I'll take you there."
Qin Yinong stared at him for two seconds and smiled, saying, "I don't know you."
You Mingxuan straightened his posture and introduced himself, "My name is—"
Before he could finish speaking, Qin Yinong interrupted him and said in a faint voice, "Did I ask you what your name is?" She paused and furrowed her brow, adding, "It's so annoying."
You Mingxuan's face flushed and paled in an instant. His chest heaved, but he dared not speak up.
Suddenly, a suppressed chuckle reached his ears. You Mingxuan turned his head and saw a female companion who was with him. He coldly glanced at her, and the female companion, in a state of fear, immediately lowered her head.
You Mingxuan's expression cleared slightly. If he couldn't handle Qin Yinong, could he still not handle a minor supporting role?
Qin Yinong narrowed her eyes, seemingly casually pausing her gaze on Tang Ruoyao, displaying a contemplative expression.
"You."
Tang Ruoyao looked up and met Qin Yinong's deep, ink-black eyes. Suddenly, she felt her heart warming up.
Qin Yinong raised her chin, appearing like a queen descending, with an authoritative tone, "Take me to see your director Lin."
The hint was already so obvious. She couldn't possibly not understand, right? Qin Yinong thought unhappily.
Tang Ruoyao locked eyes with her for two seconds and gently responded, "Okay."
The commotion attracted the attention of other crew members. Within a few short seconds, a crowd had gathered around Qin Yinong. Tang Ruoyao separated from the crowd, walking ahead to lead Qin Yinong, ignoring the envious glances from behind.
Qin Yinong put her sunglasses back on, and the corners of her eyes beneath the sunglasses curved slightly upwards.
As they walked further into the lounge, there were fewer people around. Tang Ruoyao held her breath and could hear the footsteps behind her, one after another, landing on her heartbeat, neither light nor heavy.
"An Lih." A soft voice accompanied by a delightful laugh, close to her ear yet seemingly distant.
Tang Ruoyao's heart skipped a beat. She slowed her steps, looked around to ensure no one was paying attention, then turned her head and whispered, "Sister."
"Why so nervous? Afraid someone will hear?" Only half of Qin Yinong's face, the size of a palm, was visible behind the sunglasses. Tang Ruoyao couldn't see her eyes, but she could sense her emotions from the subtle curve of her red lips.
Because of the sunglasses blocking her face, others who looked from a distance wouldn't suspect the intimacy behind their conversation.
"It's not that." Tang Ruoyao forced herself to shift her gaze away from Qin Yinong's rosy lips.
They rarely met in public. The last unexpected encounter was at the graduation ceremony, and now this was the second one. Initially, their interactions were quite formal, and both of them maintained proper decorum. But as exceptions were made and their meetings became less frequent, each encounter inevitably ignited a spark.
Affection and longing were, to some extent, inseparable. The deeper one's feelings, the more intense the longing became. Tang Ruoyao had grown accustomed to doing something when they met. Unconsciously, her attention focused on the aspects that couldn't be revealed to outsiders.
"Those people just now, who were they?" Qin Yinong didn't miss the second when Tang Ruoyao was staring at her lips, momentarily distracted. For some inexplicable reason, she also felt a slight dryness in her mouth. She cleared her throat and changed the topic.
"Just colleagues."
"Are they causing you trouble?"
"Not really." Tang Ruoyao was afraid Qin Yinong would misunderstand her as timid and easily frightened. She pursed her lips and added, "If I need your help, I'll talk to Sister Guan Han."
Qin Yinong made a sound of agreement and said, "Okay." Incidents of bullying on set were not uncommon, and it would be an opportunity for her to strengthen herself.
As they continued walking, Tang Ruoyao called out again, "Sister."
"Hmm?" Qin Yinong turned her head lazily and let out a soft hum.
Only then did Tang Ruoyao realize that their distance had unknowingly become closer. They were almost walking side by side. Did Qin Yinong notice? Tang Ruoyao didn't want to remind her, she chose to pretend not to know.
Tang Ruoyao: "Was it okay for me to say that just now?"
"What did you say?"
"I was implying to others that I have a background, connections, so they wouldn't dare to bully me." Tang Ruoyao bit her lower lip, anxiously looking at Qin Yinong, and asked, "Is it okay?"
Tang Ruoyao used the tone they would use when speaking privately, soft and tender, with a hint of unique coquettishness.
Qin Yinong took a deep breath, restraining the impulse to touch the other person.
Tang Ruoyao mistakenly thought she was angry and, using the cover of her gaze, playfully tugged at Qin Yinong's clothes and whispered, "If you disagree, I won't say it anymore."
Qin Yinong swallowed, her throat moving. "You..."
Tang Ruoyao looked at her.
Qin Yinong: "Let go."
Tang Ruoyao obediently let go.
Qin Yinong frowned and spoke seriously, "Aren't you afraid of being seen?" As she said that, she increased the distance between them.
Tang Ruoyao narrowed her eyes slightly, a trace of doubt flashing through them. She sensed Qin Yinong's contradiction. It was Qin Yinong who initially flirted with her, and now she was the one asking her to behave. What was Qin Yinong really thinking? Or was she intentionally being so contradictory to keep Tang Ruoyao guessing?
Qin Yinong calmly took a few steps forward and said, "Okay."
Tang Ruoyao was momentarily stunned.
Qin Yinong continued in a casual tone, "You already have connections."
Only then did Tang Ruoyao realize that Qin Yinong was answering her previous question.
"So should I continue saying it in the future?"
Qin Yinong nodded, "If there's something you can't solve, feel free to come to me. But don't be too arrogant and bully others."
"Thank you, Sister." Tang Ruoyao added with excitement, a smile evident in the corners of her eyes and lips, satisfying her sponsor's vanity.
According to the storyline's development, this would be the perfect moment for a kiss. However, the timing and setting were not right, unless they wanted to make tomorrow's front-page headlines.
Why didn't we choose to have this conversation when we were alone?
They both thought with regret.
.....
"Why didn't you let me know when you arrived? I've been waiting here for half a day." Lin Guoan nodded towards Tang Ruoyao, who was standing next to Qin Yinong, temporarily not paying much attention to her, and complained to Qin Yinong.
Qin Yinong shook her head and sighed, "I was planning to sneak in to admire Director Lin's performance, but there was a traffic jam on the way, and you had already finished for the day."
"You're just trying to trick me again." Lin Guoan immediately laughed, revealing his teeth, "Three days apart, this little girl of yours is getting sweeter and sweeter with her words."
Qin Yinong smiled, "Where did you get that idea? You're the one trying to trick me."
Sweet words...
Tang Ruoyao couldn't help but recall certain things, her gaze uncontrollably gliding over Qin Yinong's lips that kept moving, and subconsciously, she moistened her throat... She had tasted it before, and it was indeed sweet.
Lin Guoan casually remarked, "This Tang Ruoyao, her words are as sweet as yours. See, it's the one standing beside you."
While Tang Ruoyao was lost in her thoughts, Qin Yinong suddenly looked at her and their gazes collided in mid-air. They were locked in a silent exchange, clearly recalling the same thing. An inexplicable emotion compelled them, and neither of them withdrew their gaze first.
Not hearing any response, Lin Guoan took another look and saw his former lead actress and current lead actress engaged in a "deep eye contact." He chuckled, "Looks like you two have good chemistry."
When Lin Guoan found out that Qin Yinong was coming, he had initially wanted to introduce Tang Ruoyao to her. But after considering various factors, he decided against it. Unexpectedly, the two still ended up meeting.
"I was the one who presented her graduation certificate."
Upon hearing Lin Guoan's remark about his previous plan, Qin Yinong smiled and said.
Lin Guoan looked at Tang Ruoyao in surprise, "Really? There's even this connection?"
Tang Ruoyao adopted a humble posture as a junior, "Yes, Qin Yinong, the famous actress, was a special guest invited by our school."
"I've been oblivious to what's happening outside, so I really had no idea." Lin Guoan said cheerfully and generously. "That's perfect then. I'll treat you ladies to a meal."
Of course, Tang Ruoyao really wanted to go. She glanced at Qin Yinong, who had been smiling since the beginning, and cautiously asked, "Will it be a bother for you?"
She remembered that Xiao A told her that Qin Yinong came to discuss a film collaboration with Lin Guoan. In this situation, would it be inappropriate for her to join?
Lin Guoan waved his hand with a straightforward manner, "What kind of bother are you talking about? It's as if we have something important going on."
Tang Ruoyao thought to herself, 'Maybe you don't have anything important, but we certainly do.'
Qin Yinong remained silent the whole time, not giving a clear answer.
The atmosphere seemed tense, and Tang Ruoyao anxiously waited, her inner self in turmoil. She couldn't help but steal a glance at Qin Yinong, and then another.
It felt like a long time had passed, yet it also felt like just a short ten seconds. Qin Yinong's brief response finally passed judgment on Tang Ruoyao.
"It won't be a bother." she said.
Tang Ruoyao's heart settled down.
Qin Yinong and Lin Guoan sat in the back row of the carriage, reunited old friends, engrossed in conversation that delved into profound topics, occasionally mentioning renowned figures. At the beginning, Lin Guoan would occasionally include her in the conversation, not neglecting her. But after a while, he completely forgot about Tang Ruoyao's presence.
Tang Ruoyao tactfully became the background prop and secretly stole glances at Qin Yinong. To appear proper, she would divide her time equally between looking at Qin Yinong and looking at Lin Guoan.
She noticed that Qin Yinong frequently tucked her long hair behind her ear, probably due to having an excessive amount of hair. The slightly chestnut-colored long hair covered Qin Yinong's profile, and she would use her middle finger to tuck the strands behind her ear. However, a few strands would always slip through the gaps between her fingers, repeating the process over and over again.
The carriage was dimly lit, with an orange warm light in the back row. Every time Tang Ruoyao saw Qin Yinong lift her finger to tuck her hair, it played out frame by frame in her eyes, exuding a nostalgic ambiance reminiscent of Hong Kong films. As she looked at Qin Yinong's snow-white smooth cheeks and her lips, now even more rosy and plump with lipstick, an impulse to kiss her surged within her.
Tang Ruoyao placed her hand on her knee, her phone inverted in her palm, her fingertips itching to capture this scene. However, the circumstances did not allow it.
Qin Yinong once brushed her hair back, her fingers lingering in place.
Tang Ruoyao's blatant peeping was a bit too audacious, she was staring so intently that it felt like she was setting Qin Yinong's ears on fire.
Concerned, Lin Guoan noticed her continuously covering her ears and asked, "What's wrong? Is your ear uncomfortable?"
"A little bit." Qin Yinong casually scratched her earlobe with her recently grown nails and made up a serious story, "It feels like a little bug bit my ear."
Nonchalantly, she released her hand that was covering her ear.
Lin Guoan glanced at her ear, his face turning pale. "It's red."
Qin Yinong responded with a casual "Hmm," then turned her gaze away and waved her hand in the air a couple of times. "There are so many bugs in the summer. It's hard to prevent them."
The only one who saw through the truth, Guan Han, turned her head and looked at Tang Ruoyao, who was oblivious and still worried like Lin Guoan. Guan Han sighed inwardly and shook her head.
Lin Guoan added, "That's right, especially when shooting night scenes. Those mosquitoes... even if you're covered in mosquito repellent, they don't care."
Qin Yinong clicked her tongue, "And those poisonous mosquitoes..."
Lin Guoan slapped his leg and exclaimed, "There are indeed a lot of poisonous mosquitoes in the suburbs! Ruoyao got bitten by fifteen or sixteen of them on her legs last night, and they left bumps thicker than usual."
"That's an exaggeration." Tang Ruoyao, sensing Qin Yinong's gaze on her, instinctively pulled her leg inward and quickly explained, "Director Lin is just joking."
Realizing that commenting on a girl's legs being thick might not be appropriate, Lin Guoan changed his tone and said, "Right, she got bitten quite badly. Last night, she had a scene where she had to walk through a grassy area full of mosquitoes. The bites haven't gone away yet."
Lin Guoan changed the topic and happily continued, "Luckily, there were no snakes. Do you remember when we were shooting your scene before, camping in the mountains? One of the careless crew members accidentally set up the tent next to a snake's nest..."
Qin Yinong chimed in, but her mind began to wander, her gaze seemingly passing over Tang Ruoyao's slender legs. Tang Ruoyao was still dressed in the unique schoolgirl uniform from the movie, a jade blue short-sleeved cheongsam that reached her knees. As she sat sideways, a fair and shapely glimpse of her snow-white legs was revealed.
With Qin Yinong's excellent eyesight, she could see several red marks left by mosquito bites on Tang Ruoyao's legs. Roughly estimating, the number of bites seemed to exceed the fifteen or sixteen mentioned by Lin Guoan.
Qin Yinong subtly pursed her lips, her eyebrows slightly furrowing.
Guan Han quietly took out her phone and searched online: "How to quickly get rid of red marks from mosquito bites." She saved the answer in her notes.
Qin Yinong, Tang Ruoyao, Lin Guoan, and Guan Han were led into a private room by the waiter. Qin Yinong and Tang Ruoyao had a big reputation, and their appearances were outstanding. Many of the staff recognized them and whispered among themselves behind their backs, although they didn't say anything directly to their faces.
The waiter brought in a pot of Longjing tea and tactfully left, closing the door behind them.
As for the seating arrangement, it was only natural for Lin Guoan and Qin Yinong to sit together. Guan Han stood behind Qin Yinong, not taking a seat at all. Tang Ruoyao either sat next to Qin Yinong or on Lin Guoan's side.
According to protocol, Tang Ruoyao should have sat next to the director, but she wanted to be closer to Qin Yinong. Moreover, she had a strange intuition that Qin Yinong also wanted her to sit next to her, otherwise, she wouldn't have playfully teased her on set.
So Tang Ruoyao bit her lip and cast a faint glance at Qin Yinong.
The implication was clear.
Qin Yinong almost burst out laughing, finding the situation amusing, but she resisted giving Tang Ruoyao a response.
Tang Ruoyao, who was dragging her feet and hesitating to take a seat, grew increasingly anxious in her heart. Why wasn't Qin Yinong speaking up?
When Tang Ruoyao couldn't delay any longer, Lin Guoan began to suspect something. It was then that Qin Yinong calmly spoke up, "Ruoyao, why don't you sit next to me? It will be more convenient for Director Lin to talk to you as well."
Tang Ruoyao pulled out the chair beside Qin Yinong and whispered, "Thank you, Senior Qin."
"You're welcome, it's only natural," Qin Yinong replied, resting her chin on her hand as she looked at her, a teasing smile playing on her lips.
Tang Ruoyao felt both embarrassed and annoyed but dared not show it. A bright blush stained her snow-white cheeks.
Qin Yinong stared at the blush on her face and coughed softly, unable to suppress a low chuckle. To avoid doing anything improper, she turned her head and gave a signal to Guan Han.
Once everyone was seated, Guan Han naturally took on the role of pouring tea.
She poured tea for the three of them, and when Qin Yinong asked her to sit, she took a seat on the other side of Tang Ruoyao.
As Guan Han took her seat, she politely nodded towards her "neighbor" Tang Ruoyao. Tang Ruoyao realized that with Guan Han's keen observation skills, she must have noticed the subtle interactions between her and Qin Yinong. Looking at her awkward position being surrounded in the middle, her ears instantly turned hot. She discreetly lowered her head and took a sip of the scalding tea to conceal her embarrassment.
Just as Qin Yinong had started a conversation with Lin Guoan, she casually turned her head and saw Tang Ruoyao hurriedly bringing the tea to her mouth. Before she could finish saying, "Be careful—"
Tang Ruoyao's eyebrows knitted together, and she swallowed the hot tea, feeling the burning sensation in her throat.
"...It's hot" Qin Yinong anxiously asked, "Are you okay?"
Worry was evident in her voice.
Tang Ruoyao's tongue felt numb, and she tightly closed her mouth, her eyes welling up with tears as she shook her head.
"I'll ask the front desk to bring you a bottle of mineral water." Qin Yinong said, about to get up. But Tang Ruoyao grabbed her wrist, and Qin Yinong turned back. Tang Ruoyao released her hand and took a couple of breaths before saying, "It's okay, no need."
Being scalded while drinking tea was embarrassing enough.
Qin Yinong locked eyes with Tang Ruoyao for a couple of seconds, her gaze fixed on her tightly closed lips. A small knot formed in the center of her forehead as she called out, "Guan Han."
Guan Han stood up.
"It's really not necessary." Tang Ruoyao hurriedly said.
Guan Han hesitated for a moment, and Qin Yinong glanced at her. Guan Han quickly went out and returned shortly with a bottle of mineral water.
Tang Ruoyao didn't make a big fuss and quietly thanked her, taking small sips of the water.
Qin Yinong watched silently from the side.
Lin Guoan, who had been ignored for quite some time, clenched his fist against his lips and cleared his throat.
Qin Yinong calmly turned her face towards him and asked, "Where were we in our conversation?"
Lin Guoan: "..."
Qin Yinong raised an eyebrow, prompting him, "Hmm?"
Lin Guoan wasn't interested in where they had left off in their previous conversation. He was more curious about Qin Yinong's attitude towards Tang Ruoyao. Having worked with Qin Yinong and spent months together, he knew that she was not the type to be so nervous and attentive to anyone.
"Do you and Ruoyao know each other from before?" Lin Guoan couldn't help but ask, his curiosity evident.
"We have a good connection." Qin Yinong skillfully deflected, speaking earnestly. "Didn't we meet at the graduation ceremony? I think Tang Ruoyao is diligent and impressive, with one-tenth of my charm."
Lin Guoan burst into laughter.
Tang Ruoyao almost spurted out the mineral water she had just sipped. She wiped the corner of her lips with a tissue, unable to contain her amusement as her eyes curved.
She hadn't expected Qin Yinong, who appeared composed in front of others, to have such a narcissistic side.
Unable to resist, Tang Ruoyao glanced at Qin Yinong, and their eyes met for a moment. Qin Yinong smiled, and quickly turned away.
Tang Ruoyao took a gentle breath, her heart pounding.
Lin Guoan laughed and said, "Don't flatter yourself. You're just winning because of your age. Ruoyao might surpass you in the future."
It was the business of bosses to engage in banter with each other, but taking it seriously would be uncalled for.
Tang Ruoyao modestly smiled and replied, "How could I compare myself to Senior Qin? If I had one-tenth of Teacher Qin's abilities, I would be content."
Qin Yinong suddenly turned her head, her gaze intense as she asked, "Really? You never thought about surpassing me?"
Tang Ruoyao was taken aback by the question, her words stuck in her throat, unable to come out.
She smiled and went against her true feelings, saying, "Really, you..."
Qin Yinong interrupted her, saying, "Drink your water. You've burned yourself, yet you still have so much to say."
Tang Ruoyao nodded obediently and continued drinking her water.
With her half-lowered eyelids, she let her eyes wander for a moment, making sure she didn't detect any displeasure in Qin Yinong's tone. Instead, there was a subtle sense of concern, which slowly fostered a sweet feeling in her heart.
On the other hand, Lin Guoan, who was unaware of the situation, completely missed the playful banter between the two. He offered some advice, saying, "Yinong, don't bully the younger ones."
Qin Yinong chuckled, "Bully the younger ones? Me?"
She pointed to herself and then to Tang Ruoyao, wearing a genuinely puzzled expression.
Lin Guoan nodded.
Qin Yinong smirked, "Alright, I won't bully the younger ones. But why hasn't the food arrived yet?"
Lin Guoan replied, "The food in this place is delicious, but it takes time to prepare. We'll have to wait a bit. Let's talk about business first. You wanted to discuss a new film collaboration with me, right? You mentioned on the phone that it's a same-sex film?"
Qin Yinong blew on her tea to cool it down, took a sip, and spoke seriously, "Yes, it's a lesbian-themed film, and the script was written by Chai Ziqiu."
Tang Ruoyao's eyes suddenly widened, and her long eyelashes trembled.
Was she going to act in it?
"I know, I've read the script." Lin Guoan pondered and asked, "Have you finalized the cast?"
Qin Yinong replied, "We haven't found the director yet." Implicitly, it meant that it wasn't finalized yet.
Lin Guoan smiled.
In fact, one of the lead roles had already been cast, but with Tang Ruoyao present, Qin Yinong didn't feel like disclosing the fact that she wanted to play the lead role in a lesbian-themed film, even if it was just a film character. Moreover, this matter wasn't set in stone. If the director felt that she wasn't suitable and could provide convincing reasons, she would be open to considering other options.
Qin Yinong and Lin Guoan engaged in a lively discussion, until the waiter knocked on the door and brought the food, temporarily interrupting their conversation.
As the dishes were served, Lin Guoan picked up his chopsticks but his expression changed slightly. After hesitating for a moment, he couldn't hold it in any longer and said, "I'll go to the restroom first."
Qin Yinong and Tang Ruoyao nodded in agreement.
After Lin Guoan left, there were only three people left in the private room.
Qin Yinong said, "Guan Han, please step out for a moment."
Guan Han readily complied and considerately closed the door behind her.
With only two people left, the spacious room seemed to suddenly shrink into a corner. Tang Ruoyao sat upright, her eyes lowered and silent.
The alluring scent of perfume filled the air as a hand gently held hers, fingers tenderly caressing each of her fingertips. Then, she was guided to sit on Qin Yinong's lap, a warm arm wrapping around her waist, securing her in place.
Feeling the warmth beside her, Tang Ruoyao stiffened and dared not move. She wouldn't be so reserved if they were at home, but this was a private room! Lin Guoan could return at any moment!
"Does it still hurt?" Qin Yinong lifted her chin with her index finger.
Tang Ruoyao focused and understood that she was asking if her burned tongue still hurt. She immediately shook her head.
"Let me see."
Tang Ruoyao hesitated, not wanting to, but Qin Yinong's tone was firm. "Open your mouth."
Blushing, Tang Ruoyao reluctantly opened her mouth, sticking out her tongue slightly to show her. She mumbled, "It's really fine."
"Want to see if you can taste something?"
Tang Ruoyao turned her head to look at the dishes on the table and furrowed her brow. "Director Lin hasn't come back yet. Wouldn't it be inappropriate for us to start eating before him?"
Qin Yinong smiled. "I didn't say it was the taste of the food."
"Then—" Tang Ruoyao met her seemingly amused gaze and suddenly understood. The air around them heated up instantly. Tang Ruoyao's heart raced, unable to meet her eyes, and she shifted uncomfortably, looking away.
Qin Yinong didn't say anything more. She gently held the back of Tang Ruoyao's head, tilted it back and leaned in, kissing her.
