CHAPTER 28
"Is Song Lengzhu based in City A?" Xiaoli asked what Tang Yu had in mind.
"Probably not. It's said that they roam around year-round without a fixed base, but with the recent mission, she's likely in City A." Zhou Zhou said halfway through, glancing out the window.
There was some movement outside.
Very faint voices were coming from near the stream below the camp.
Zhou Zhou quickly pulled over a suitcase from the corner, which was already packed with quite a few items, seemingly prepared for an immediate escape. She also grabbed some things from the research laboratory and tossed them into the suitcase, saying as she packed, "Players here to scavenge for supplies have arrived. Aren't you going to run?"
When a camp is overrun, the supplies inside are bound to be completely looted. Especially for a medium-sized camp like the Beixi Camp, it's not just Tang Yu's team eyeing the supplies.
Upon hearing this, Tang Yu turned and led Jin Ye and Xiaoli out of the laboratory. Because of Zhou Zhou's interference, they hadn't even managed to get the generator they wanted!
The 40-kilowatt gasoline generator in the power room weighed a hefty 900 pounds. Fortunately, it was portable, mounted on large wheels, and placed on a mechanical trailer that could be pushed or pulled. Tang Yu unplugged all the wires, took some gasoline, and then the three of them worked together to push the generator out of the camp entrance.
As they passed by a pile of bodies scattered haphazardly at the entrance, Tang Yu also picked up some weapons.
They couldn't move the generator too far for now, so they decided to hide it in the woods, covering it with branches and leaves, and would figure out a way to transport it back to the village later.
It seemed they needed to find a vehicle or some convenient means of transport in the city.
Once they hid the generator and crouched in the woods, peering toward the Beixi camp, they saw that the camp had already been occupied by seven or eight unknown individuals. Unfortunately, this group would soon realize that the camp only had heavy items left, the food and firearms had long since disappeared.
Tang Yu's sharp eyes caught sight of Zhou Zhou, who was crouching and running along the dirt road at the camp entrance with a suitcase. After thinking for a moment, Tang Yu decided to follow her with her teammates.
Zhou Zhou hadn't finished explaining why Song Lengzhu was in City A.
Tang Yu didn't expect that the City A Zhou Zhou mentioned was the same city where she woke up.
It was a city slightly smaller than City Y, but it was still evident that it had been extremely prosperous before the disaster. However, Zhou Zhou was taking them not to the city center, but to a village on the outskirts.
On the way, Tang Yu clarified what the so-called mission entailed. This was a server-wide mission, as the name suggests, the mission content was publicly available to all players. They could accept the mission through the world announcement and obtain relevant details.
However, zombies like Tang Yu and Jin Ye were not qualified to view it.
Although there was a certain chance they could trigger it randomly, the mission content might differ from that of the players.
Zhou Zhou informed Tang Yu that the previous mission to kill the Zombie King was also a server-wide mission, which drew many players to City Y. However, such missions often turned into a survival game, so many players who valued their lives would automatically ignore the news, leaving it to those who were fearless and capable to participate.
The reason Zhou Zhou was curious about this mission was that it was related to "medicine."
The game provided very few hints. When Xiaoli checked the world announcement, she only saw the mission name "Life-saving Medicine" and the address for City A.
Jin Ye and Xiaoli's original team rarely participated in such server-wide missions. Xiaoli searched around for a while before finding the forum entry in the world channel.
"There's a forum too." Tang Yu said, even though she couldn't see Xiaoli's panel, filled with curiosity.
"Yeah, the forum discusses clues about server-wide missions, but there are also people spreading false information to confuse their competitors. Overall, the credibility is very low, so it's not recommended to look at it. But since our mission hasn't triggered yet, it doesn't hurt to take a look." Jin Ye explained.
After searching for a while, Xiaoli only extracted two pieces of information of unknown authenticity.
One was "The completion condition is to develop a special medicine."
The other was "The special mission must be triggered by the ancient well in the urban village."
Zhou Zhou, who was hurrying along, didn't even look up: "Both are fake. The information on the forum is always miles away from the actual results. Plus, these two pieces of information are too detailed, players who get clues won't easily share them with others."
Develop a special medicine? It takes a lot of time to formulate a new drug.
Xiaoli asked Zhou Zhou, "Will Song Lengzhu participate in this mission too?"
Zhou Zhou replied, "She basically participates in all server-wide missions."
"Then why are you looking for her? Are you friends with her?"
"We're not friends, just trading partners. She helps me get raw materials, and I occasionally provide her with new drugs. She has something I want, so I'm going to get it and see what this mission is all about."
Tang Yu pondered, her head lowered. Rationality told her not to get involved in this mess, but deep down, she was thinking: Since Song Lengzhu was going to take on the mission, could she find a way to outsmart her? Maybe if she succeeded, she could eliminate this rival once and for all.
It just so happened that they also needed to go to the nearby city to look for supplies, so it wouldn't hurt to check out the mission point as well.
Tang Yu raised her head and looked at Jin Ye with determination in her eyes.
Jin Ye stepped back.. "What are you planning? Are you looking to get yourself killed again?"
"Don't say it like that. We're lucky and will be fine," Tang Yu replied. "It's perfect to go with Zhou Zhou, we'll have some company while having some fun."
"Fine, if you want to go, we'll go. But if it gets dangerous, I'll run first."
"Truly my good sister," Tang Yu said with a bright smile. "But our goal this time isn't to complete a mission, it's to get revenge. While Song Lengzhu is busy fighting other players or zombies, we can take some shots and set some traps. She's always chasing after us, it's time to fight back."
"Agreed." Jin Ye said, touching the scar left by the bullet hole on the back of her neck.
She had originally thought about finding a doctor to remove the bullet, but it was clear Zhou Zhou wasn't going to do that. So she decided to leave it for now.
By the time they reached the outskirts of the urban village, it was already late at night. Tang Yu decided to find a place to rest for the night and check the village during the day, as it was too dark to see anything now.
There was a small archway outside the urban village with the words "Huang Village" inscribed on it. Clearly, before the city developed, this had been a fairly significant village. Now, it was surrounded by tall buildings, looking abandoned and out of place.
They stopped next to a small shop on the left side of the archway, but the shop had already been ransacked. Tang Yu pushed open the somewhat intact glass door and peered inside.
The small shop in the urban village was nothing like the stores in the city center. It was cramped and small, with only two rows of shelves, which were now overturned and looked very chaotic.
Taking a step inside, Tang Yu immediately felt something sticky on the floor, like soy sauce and vinegar that had been spilled.
Tang Yu looked around for a moment and said, "This place isn't suitable for resting."
"Let's find another spot," Jin Ye suggested. "Look for the stairs, the rooms upstairs should be cleaner."
Tang Yu stepped back and casually closed the glass door.
But at that moment, a rustling sound suddenly came from the back of the shop, quite noticeable in the silence of the night.
"Could it be a zombie? I hope it's not a player." Xiaoli quickly darted behind Jin Ye for cover.
The group waited for a moment, but no zombies or players rushed out, instead, the rustling sound continued.
Tang Yu drew her weapon and reopened the glass door, stepping over the fallen shelves to peek further inside the shop.
After taking a couple of steps, Tang Yu noticed something surprising: there was a room inside the shop. The door was closed, and the rustling sound was coming from there.
The others followed her in, weapons in hand, spreading out to either side of the door.
Tang Yu reached for the doorknob, twisted her wrist, and the door creaked open.
Inside, it was pitch black, without a hint of light.
Everyone's alertness was heightened.
Suddenly, a shadow darted out from within the room, bumping into Tang Yu's feet before quickly scrambling up and dashing out onto the street.
Tang Yu didn't draw her weapon because the shadow was very small, and it was furry.
It seemed to be a black cat.
As the black cat left, the rustling sound in the room ceased, replaced by complete darkness.
The group let out a sigh of relief, it appeared to be just a small animal.
Tang Yu pushed the door open a bit wider and pulled a lighter from her backpack, using its weak light to get a better look at the room's decor.
This is a bedroom with a large and a small bed, separated by an old curtain in the middle. Next to the large bed was a nightstand. In addition, there was an old wooden cabinet piled with several snake-skin bags on top.
A very typical dwelling in an urban village.
The family living here didn't seem well-off, cramming into one room while the front served as the store and the back as their living space.
Tang Yu held the lighter and turned around the room. The beds were very clean, and there were no zombies in the room. In fact, the floor was free of any broken or collapsed debris.
This was quite rare.
Tang Yu found the light switch on the wall, but as expected, the light was not working. However, she caught a glimpse of two large candles on the nightstand.
The candles were shaped like a teddy bear and had been burned down halfway, leaving just the lower half of the bear's body.
Tang Yu lit the candle with her lighter, and the room was quickly filled with light.
"This place is quite clean. We can stay here tonight." Xiaoli said excitedly as she closed the door and set down her backpack.
Zhou Zhou also relaxed a bit. She had become acquainted with Tang Yu and the others, but still maintained a certain social distance, treating each other as fellow travelers. Perhaps after this mission, they would go their separate ways.
Xiaoli, petite in size, sat on the single bed, feeling the blanket that seemed like it was meant for a child, and said to Jin Ye, "We'll sleep on this bed tonight. Tang Yu and Zhou Zhou can have the large bed."
Jin Ye naturally agreed, while Tang Yu rolled her eyes, she didn't like sharing a bed with others.
Even in the camp, she and Lu Lu each had their own beds.
But given the current situation, she couldn't say much.
Tang Yu didn't put down her backpack, she remained alert, her gaze scanning the room until it landed on the large wooden cabinet against the wall.
She walked up to the cabinet, reached for the handle, and thought that if they were going to rest comfortably, every nook and cranny of the room needed to be checked.
But the next second, Tang Yu suddenly froze.
"What's wrong?" Jin Ye asked.
Tang Yu slightly turned her head and pointed at the cabinet, forming words with her lips.
"There's someone inside."
