CHAPTER 8

Tang Yu raised her head and looked at the roof of the house on the left side. The houses here were all single-story, without a second floor. The roof was flat, not sloping like tiled buildings.

"Are there guards on the roof?"

"No."

After receiving a positive answer, Tang Yu used the chimney climbing method. She pressed her feet against the walls, using the strength of her hands to easily climb onto the roof of the bungalow. The numbness in her injured calf had become unnoticeable, more like numbness than healing.

She reached out and pulled the other two up. Once they were on the rooftop, they immediately lay down and closely observed their surroundings.

As Jian Wu had mentioned, there were guards everywhere. Some were training, while others were smoking and relaxing on the side. There were about forty to fifty people within sight.

However, the guards were mainly concentrated in the first two rows of houses. Further away, they could only see a few scattered individuals guarding the entrance and exit of the bungalows.

"Is there any way to get to the back?" Tang Yu asked.

"Wait."

"Wait for what?"

"Wait for the zombie siege," Jian Wu lowered his voice. "Night time is when zombies are most active. Every night, random wild zombies follow the scent of humans and find their way to the camp. The vanguard rushes to the iron fence at this time to score points."

"When will that happen?"

"It's about to happen."

As if to echo Jian Wu's words, there was commotion among the guards in the camp. They started gathering in groups of three or four and walked towards the iron fence.

When the first gunshot rang out, Tang Yu had already been lying on the floor for half an hour. With the sound of the gunshot, almost all the guards below had gathered at the edge of the camp to score points.

Tang Yu turned her head and, with the advantage of the higher position and the camp's lights, she could clearly see the zombies outside the barbed wire fence surging like a tide. They had lost their judgment and recklessly threw themselves at the electric grid. The zombies in front were electrocuted, while the ones behind stepped on the bodies of their fellow zombies and pushed forward.

Unlike Tang Yu, those bodies seemed to have been exposed to the elements for several months. Their faces showed little signs of fresh flesh, and their dull skin covered their skulls. Their mouths drooled and contained bits of meat, their speech unintelligible. They didn't resemble living beings at all.

'How pitiful and disgusting. Will I also end up like that in the future?' Tang Yu let out a sigh.

Jian Wu whispered, "Let's go! There are usually only about twenty zombies outside, and the guards will come back soon."

Seizing the opportunity, the three of them jumped directly from the rooftop, using rolls to dissipate the impact, and quickly ran towards the last two rows of bungalows.

Under the cover of darkness, their movements were unusually agile. At night, the mobility of zombies was enhanced by 10%.

As they passed by the middle bungalow, a figure darted out from the corner and collided with Jian Wu.

The person who was knocked down let out a scream, but upon closer inspection of Jian Wu's half-covered face, they were even more frightened and shouted again.

Jian Wu hurriedly covered the person's mouth and anxiously said, "It's me, Brother Li!"

The person who had been knocked down was indeed Brother Li, and Jian Wu's introduction had no effect because Brother Li couldn't understand the language of zombies. Brother Li, with some unknown strength, pushed Jian Wu away and tried to shout for help.

Tang Yu hesitated for a moment but didn't intervene.

It was Jian Wu who took action. Feeling anxious, he tightly covered Brother Li's mouth from behind and let out a low growl from his throat.

Brother Li couldn't understand the words of zombies, but he could understand their threats. Startled by Jian Wu's growl, he dared not move and stared straight at Jian Wu.

The three of them supported Brother Li and took refuge in the last row of bungalows. This particular house had collapsed halfway, and they hid within this ruin.

Jian Wu explained, "Brother Li is the leader of the logistics team. He has a lot of information and might know where the girl you're looking for is."

Tang Yu frowned, "That's all well and good, but how do we communicate with him?"

This question stumped Jian Wu, and he stood there in a daze, making incomprehensible sounds. It was Jin Ye who pulled out the two strips of cloth and showed them to Brother Li, gesturing the height and build of a little girl. Brother Li understood. He realized that these three zombies were here to abduct someone.

His eyes quickly darted around, and he pointed to a small inconspicuous room diagonally ahead, then made some random gestures. The building was very small, more like a storage shed filled with miscellaneous items. It was so inconspicuous that they had never seen anyone enter or exit it. When Jian Wu and Tang Yu introduced the camp to him, they didn't even mention this building.

"Aha!" Jian Wu suddenly realized. It was indeed a good place to detain prisoners.

Brother Li then pointed to his own mouth, indicating that he had something to say. Tang Yu was about to stop him, but Jian Wu let go of him, although his fingers were still poised at Brother Li's throat.

Fortunately, Brother Li was smart enough not to shout loudly again. He swallowed his saliva and timidly spoke to Jian Wu, "Brother, I've been good to you, right? Since you arrived, I've done all the point-earning tasks with you. Can you spare my life today?"

Jian Wu was somewhat moved. It seemed that Brother Li had indeed been good to him on regular occasions, but the hand that held the other's throat didn't loosen.

"I won't kill you, don't worry." Jian Wu said.

"What?" Brother Li only heard a groaning sound. He nervously thought that Jian Wu had rejected his proposal and quickly said, "Although I assigned you dangerous tasks, it's not all your burden. That incident where Liang scolded you was an accident, believe me, it really was."

Jian Wu's face revealed a look of astonishment. Previously, he and Brother Li had taken on missions above their rank and were scolded by Liang, but upon careful thought, Jian Wu realized that Brother Li had been hiding behind him the whole time and hadn't faced any punishment.

Tang Yu couldn't help but find it amusing as he looked at Jian Wu. This guy had been used as a shield without even realizing it.

Brother Li wanted to say something else but was once again silenced by Jian Wu.

"So, what now? Shall we go save the person?" Jian Wu asked Tang Yu, raising a brick from beside him with his free hand and hitting Brother Li on the back of his head, knocking him unconscious.

"You truly have a kind heart. You really won't kill him?" Tang Yu teased him.

"Even so, he has been good to me before, and this time he gave us information. I won't kill him."

"Suit yourself." Tang Yu rolled his eyes. "Let's move quickly."

The three of them left the unconscious Brother Li and quietly approached the wall of the small warehouse.

By now, the guards stationed in front of the wire fence had finished clearing the zombies and were bustling back. They could even hear footsteps approaching from around the corner.

The three didn't have time to spare and pushed open a side window of the small warehouse, quickly climbing inside.

Once inside, Tang Yu was dumbfounded.

What kind of warehouse was this? It was more like a wolf's den.

The interior was clean and tidy, with a wooden table placed in the center where a man and a woman sat facing each other, drinking tea.

The man was thin, even wearing a top hat, sitting with his back to the window. The woman had a cold expression, exuding a sense of murderous intent.

Behind the two of them, there were three individuals standing like subordinates.

The sudden intrusion of Tang Yu and the others froze the air for half a second, a silence, a deathly silence.

"Run!" Tang Yu was the first to react, not stopping his footsteps as he directly jumped out of the window.

She should have noticed earlier, how could a warehouse for holding prisoners have a window!

The people inside the house only saw three masked individuals and didn't immediately react. It was only after the woman who was serving tea gave a simple command that they all started to move.

"They're zombies, chase after them!"
