CHAPTER 40

When Shu Yanyan finished her shower and came out, she saw Chu Yu and Yunmiao sitting face to face on the bed, playfully interacting.

Chu Yu held a small tiger-shaped toy in her hand and said something that made Yunmiao unable to sit still, causing her to fall backward onto the bedding.

Looking at this scene, a warm feeling surged in Shu Yanyan's heart.

After Chu Qing disappeared, she had imagined similar scenes countless times. Now that they were reunited, even though Chu Yu had already played with Yunmiao on multiple occasions, every time she saw this kind of scene, it filled her with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

But soon, after the moment of emotion, her alert system began to kick in.

Fifteen minutes ago, she had finished bathing Yunmiao and asked her daughter to wait on the bed while she prepared herself before putting Yunmiao to sleep.

How did Chu Yu, whom she had finally managed to shake off, suddenly catch up to them in the blink of an eye?

Shu Yanyan took a deep breath, furrowed her brow, and began to gather the momentum to drive Chu Yu away.

However, unexpectedly, Chu Yu took the initiative first.

Seeing Shu Yanyan emerge from the bathroom, she smiled and said to Yunmiao, "Look, Mommy is here."

Yunmiao was already very happy, but when she saw Shu Yanyan, she became even more excited. She stood on the bed barefoot and jumped a few times. "Mommy!"

Shu Yanyan walked over to her, hugged Yunmiao, and helped her sit properly. "Be careful."

Then, she looked at Chu Yu and asked with a hint of inquiry, "How did you come here? Haven't you finished tidying up the guest room?"

Chu Yu put on a pitiful face. "I won't go to the guest room. The sofa in the living room is big enough, I can manage for one night there."

She turned to look at Yunmiao. "At least this way, I'll be closer to you and Yunmiao."

Shu Yanyan's soft-heartedness emerged for a moment, but her previously firm determination quickly extinguished it.

She replied with a stern tone, "...It's not just for one night."

Chu Yu actually smiled. "It's okay, I'm willing to wait as long as it takes."

She reached out and touched Yunmiao's face. "During this time, I can also observe whether I really sleep soundly or not, so I won't accidentally press against Yunmiao in the future."

Shu Yanyan: "..."

Facing Chu Yu, she was fully armed, afraid that the slightest distraction would give the other party an opportunity to counterattack. But after these two rounds of confrontation... Chu Yu's behavior was too cooperative.

It seemed like she had fully accepted the idea of sleeping outside, waving a white flag before her, without the slightest sense of resistance. On the contrary, it was Shu Yanyan herself who appeared overly vigilant due to her nervousness.

Shu Yanyan felt like she had punched a cotton ball several times.

She thought for a moment and realized she couldn't trust Chu Yu's sweet words. So she directly requested, "It's getting late, so you should leave."

There was still some time before Yunmiao usually went to sleep, but Shu Yanyan couldn't worry about that much.

Upon hearing her words, Chu Yu actually stood up from the bed. "Alright."

She leaned down and earnestly said goodbye to Yunmiao, "Yunmiao, Mom is going out first. You'll sleep with Mommy tonight, okay? You have to be good, alright?"

Yunmiao nodded.

The little girl knelt up, raised her hands, and hugged Chu Yu. Her head buried in Chu Yu's shoulder as she softly and tenderly said, "Mom, goodnight. Yunmiao will be very well-behaved."

Chu Yu caressed her hair. "Mommy believes in you."

Naturally, the two of them left a goodnight kiss on each other's cheeks before reluctantly parting.

Before leaving, Chu Yu looked at Shu Yanyan and also kissed her on the cheek. "Yanyan, goodnight."

Shu Yanyan's eyes went blank. "...Goodnight."

In the next second, Chu Yu turned and walked out, closing the bedroom door gently as she went. She even took the initiative to close the bedroom door for them with a soft "click."

As the bedroom door closed, making a soft "click" sound, Shu Yanyan's senses were finally awakened.

She stared blankly at the closed door——

Did she really just leave like that?!

She was extremely bewildered, as if she had won a battle that she had expected to be very intense, and it was an effortless victory. The victory came too quickly and too easily, giving her a sense of unreality.

Behind her, Yunmiao sat on the bed and called out to her, "Mommy."

She held a delicately bound storybook in her hands and asked, "Do you want to hear a story about Little Gugui today?"

Shu Yanyan snapped back to reality and turned to look at Yunmiao, forcing herself to shift her attention. "...Does Yunmiao want to hear it?"

Yunmiao nodded. "Mm-hmm, I want to hear it!"

Shu Yanyan smiled and climbed onto the bed, sitting cross-legged.

There were several children's books on the bed that she hadn't seen before, most likely brought in by Chu Yu. They had previously discussed the topic of Yunmiao's favorite books, and Chu Yu had mentioned buying all the books that Yunmiao liked and having the opportunity to read them to her.

Shu Yanyan randomly picked up one of the books and flipped through it, realizing that the ones Chu Yu brought were all about "Little Gugui" stories.

Little Gugui was very famous in this era and was a highly prominent "little protagonist" in children's literature, similar in popularity to Shu Yanyan's favorite "Big Ears Tutu" when she was a child.

The books contained many interesting stories from Little Gugui's life. While they were entertaining, they also imparted some simple knowledge to children and instilled positive concepts, making them highly popular among parents in the interstellar era.

Shu Yanyan used to buy this series of stories for Yunmiao as well, but she couldn't afford physical books, so she would usually download the e-books and read them to Yunmiao.

This time, Chu Yu had brought the physical books, and one could imagine how happy little Yunmiao must be.

When Yunmiao was happy, Shu Yanyan's mood improved somewhat as well.

She held Yunmiao in her arms and selected a book, softly starting to read.

"Today is a sunny day. Early in the morning, Little Gugui prepared a small backpack for the outing and got ready to go to the Interstellar Museum with Mommy and Daddy to visit the starships..."

The story was very interesting, and Yunmiao would occasionally exclaim with a "wow" and sometimes burst into laughter. The cooperation of her little precious brought a sense of accomplishment to Shu Yanyan as the storyteller. Gradually, she also immersed herself in the story.

Time passed quickly, and after two or three stories, Yunmiao couldn't control her yawns anymore.

Shu Yanyan observed her expression and timely put the books aside on the bedside table.

"It's getting late. Shall we get ready to sleep?"

Yunmiao nodded drowsily. "Okay."

Shu Yanyan lay down, and Yunmiao obediently snuggled up in her embrace, just like hundreds of nights before. The mother and daughter lay on the bed, embracing each other warmly.

Shu Yanyan carefully tidied up the mischievous stray hairs on Yunmiao's cheek and gently coaxed, "It's time for baby to sleep."

Yunmiao blinked her eyes, but couldn't resist her drowsiness, so she could only half-close them.

She pursed her lips and asked Shu Yanyan, "Mommy, why can't Mom sleep with us?"

Shu Yanyan was momentarily stunned.

She gently touched Yunmiao's face. "Does Yunmiao want to sleep with Mom?"

Yunmiao replied, "I want to sleep with Mommy and Mom together."

Shu Yanyan smiled.

Yunmiao asked in a soft voice, "Am I being too greedy?"

Shu Yanyan shook her head. "Well, we can't really say it's being greedy. Yunmiao is the little baby of Mommy and Mom, and Yunmiao can sleep with Mommy and Mom."

Yunmiao nodded.

She then asked, "But why does Mom have to sleep in the living room?"

Shu Yanyan used the same reason as before. "She's afraid of accidentally pressing on Yunmiao while sleeping. But... if Yunmiao really wants to, in a couple of days, if Mom's sleeping position is really good, we can sleep with Mom. How about that?"

Yunmiao finally felt satisfied and closed her eyes. "Okay!"

Shu Yanyan hugged her. "Alright then, Yunmiao, go to sleep."

Yunmiao didn't respond, and Shu Yanyan lowered her head to see that the little girl had already drifted into a light sleep.

Amused by her own daughter, she gently tickled Yunmiao's nose and whispered, "Hehe, little piggy."

As soon as the words left her mouth, she recalled what had happened before—

Yesterday, when Chu Yu "teased" her, she also called her that nickname!

Shu Yanyan blushed.

Feeling uncomfortable, she turned her head and glanced at the bedroom door, making sure it was securely closed before retracting her gaze with lingering fear.

"Hmph, I'm not a silly pig, and Yunmiao isn't a silly pig either!" She muttered under her breath, "That jerk Chu Yu, she can sleep on the couch for a few more days!"

After grumbling, she satisfiedly yawned.

Then, just like Yunmiao, she sank into the soft bedding, allowing drowsiness to completely captivate her.

The little rabbit's self-defense counterattack, round one!

Shu Yanyan, victorious in the end!
