CHAPTER 122: Wan & Shan's Side Story [3]
Wan Baiyun knew that their marriage was definitely going to end, but she still held onto other hopes. "Can I come to see you and the baby in the future?"
"You can." Shan Pan nodded. "If you want to see the baby, just send me a message. I will make time for you. You are the baby's mother, and I won't deprive you of the right to see her."
"Thank you." Wan Baiyun lowered her gaze, filled with a sense of loss and sadness.
"Hiss," Shan Pan furrowed her brow, suddenly feeling a deeper contraction than before. Subconsciously, she gripped Wan Baiyun's hand tighter.
After the contraction passed, Shan Pan turned to Wan Baiyun and said, "Call the doctor. I feel more pain than earlier."
"Okay." Wan Baiyun pressed the call button, and shortly after, Shan Pan's attending physician came and examined her.
After the examination, the doctor said to Wan Baiyun, "Please continue using pheromone soothing. The cervix has dilated further. When it's close enough, I will administer epidural anesthesia so you can take her for a walk in the ward. It will help the cervix dilate faster."
"Okay." Wan Baiyun nodded. Once the doctor left, she immediately walked into the room and helped Shan Pan sit up from the bed.
Shan Pan felt weak from the pain and leaned against Wan Baiyun's chest, her forehead covered in cold sweat.
"Can you walk?" Wan Baiyun gently touched her belly, her eyes filled with worry.
"Mm-hmm, another contraction." Shan Pan said, resting her head on Wan Baiyun's chest, gasping in pain. Her hand, gripping Wan Baiyun's clothes, turned pale from the tightness of her grip.
Wan Baiyun hugged her waist, bending down to make her more comfortable, and reassured her, "If it's painful, bite me. It's okay."
"Mm," Shan Pan opened her mouth and lightly bit down on Wan Baiyun's collarbone.
Sensing that Shan Pan wasn't biting hard, Wan Baiyun lowered her head slightly and unconsciously pressed her face gently against Shan Pan's face, her eyes filled with heartache.
Wearing a mask, Shan Pan assumed it was an unintentional touch and didn't notice Wan Baiyun's action."Can you walk?" Wan Baiyun hugged Shan Pan's waist, carefully avoiding her belly. "If you don't have the strength, we can sit on the birthing ball for a while."
"Yes, I can walk." Shan Pan released her bite and grabbed Wan Baiyun's arm, using it as support as they slowly took steps forward.
Wan Baiyun's movements were also slow as she tried to match Shan Pan's pace.
Shan Pan walked slowly, often pausing as contractions came, and occasionally stopping to rest for a while.
Finally, after more than an hour of walking, the doctor came to check again. Once they confirmed that the criteria for epidural anesthesia were met, they administered it to Shan Pan.
After receiving the epidural, the doctor uncovered Shan Pan's clothes, exposing her belly, and attached a fetal monitor to her.
Wan Baiyun stood by, looking at Shan Pan's large belly and her petite frame, her eyes filled with heartache.
Shan Pan felt uncomfortable under Wan Baiyun's gaze and instinctively covered her belly with a small blanket, not wanting her to see.
"We still have some time before delivery." Shen Liangxi walked in and checked the time. "Pan Pan, drink some nutrient solution to replenish your energy. Giving birth will require quite a bit of effort."
"Okay." Pan Pan didn't refuse and took the nutrient solution from Shen Liangxi, drinking it all in one go.
"Now you can rest and conserve your energy." Shen Liangxi said, stifling a yawn herself.
As soon as Wan Baiyun noticed the situation, she immediately said to Shan Pan, "You're tired, let me take you to rest."
"Okay." Shan Pan nodded and watched as Shan Cong carefully led Shen Liangxi away.
After Shan Cong and Shen Liangxi left, only Shan Pan and Wan Baiyun remained in the hospital room.
Shan Pan yawned and said, "I'm going to sleep."
"Okay, I'll stay by your side." Wan Baiyun gently smoothed Shan Pan's hair, nodded, and turned off the bedside lamp.
The room was suddenly enveloped in darkness, and Wan Baiyun felt a bit tired too. Holding Shan Pan's hand, she silently leaned by the bedside, slowly closing her eyes.
With the doctor coming to check on them at intervals, Shan Pan and Wan Baiyun didn't sleep well.
In the early morning, when Shan Pan's cervix was fully dilated, she was taken into the delivery room, accompanied by Wan Baiyun.
"Push," once in the delivery room, Shan Pan followed the doctor's instructions, exerting all her strength to deliver the baby.
Wan Baiyun watched her pushing with all her might, her face turning red, and couldn't help but have tears well up in her eyes.
Finally, when Shan Pan was almost exhausted, she heard the doctor say, "One more time, I can see the baby's head."
Shan Pan took a deep breath, gathered all her strength, and bit down on Wan Baiyun's hand, exerting her last ounce of energy.
Wan Baiyun seemed to feel no pain at all. After hearing the doctor's call, she heard a loud cry.
Exhausted, Shan Pan released her grip, her face filled with fatigue. Her eyes seemed unfocused as she glanced at Wan Baiyun beside her and finally cursed, "Wan Baiyun, you jerk."
"Yeah, I'm a jerk." Wan Baiyun kissed Shan Pan's forehead through the mask. "Pan Pan, you've worked hard. I'm sorry, I'm really sorry."
"Mom, come and cut the umbilical cord for the baby." the doctor turned to Wan Baiyun and said.
Shan Pan watched as Wan Baiyun nodded and received the scissors handed by the doctor, her hands trembling. In a fluster, she followed the doctor's guidance and cut their daughter's umbilical cord.
"Have you seen the gender clearly?" the doctor asked Wan Baiyun.
Wan Baiyun nodded, "Yes, it's a girl."
"Okay." the doctor quickly cleaned the baby and examined her. "It's a healthy baby girl, weighing 3.5 kilograms."
After the examination, the doctor swaddled the baby and brought her to Shan Pan's side. "Mom, give your baby a kiss."
Shan Pan looked at the baby with a gentle gaze and gently pressed her face against the baby's cheek.
After the first contact, Shan Pan fell into a deep sleep.
Wan Baiyun carefully held the soft and delicate baby in her arms, with a worried expression as she asked the doctor.
The doctor immediately explained, "The mother is just a bit exhausted, she just needs some rest."
Wan Baiyun finally felt relieved and followed Shan Pan out of the delivery room.
After the baby was brought out, she was received by Shan Pan's mother, who was waiting outside.
Shan Pan's father leaned over and looked at the baby in the swaddle, smiling kindly, "Oh, so adorable, she looks just like our Pan Pan when she was born."
"Yes, so adorable and well-behaved." Shen Liangxi also nodded, her gaze gentle.
Shan Cong stood aside, looking at her little niece. She raised her hand and touched Shen Liangxi's belly, smiling as she asked, "Who will our child resemble?"
Shen Liangxi turned her head and smiled, "Who do you want her to resemble?"
"It would be best if she looks like you," Shan Cong smiled with happiness. "Our Shen jiejie [Big sister or older sister] is so beautiful, of course, it would be best if she resembles you."
"Oh, come on." Shen Liangxi raised her hand and pinched Wan Cong's face. "You're handsome too."
"Can't she just look like the two of you?" Even Shan's mother, who had lived for so long, was annoyed by these two, "Xixi, go and rest. You're already sleep-deprived, and now that Pan Pan has given birth, you should go rest."
"Shan Cong, your wife is pregnant. Take good care of her and make sure she gets some sleep."
"I know, I know." Wan Cong held Shen Liangxi's hand and led her to rest.
"What should we name the baby?" Wan Baiyun eagerly asked as she followed Shan Pan into the hospital room. Shan's mother suddenly thought of this.
Shan Yuan spoke up, "Wan Baiyun agreed to let the child have Pan Pan's surname, but she wants to choose a name for the baby."
"She agreed to let the baby have Pan Pan's surname?" Shan's father was somewhat surprised. "What did Wan Shiying say? Did her grandmother agree?"
"They're getting a divorce, so even if they disagree, they have to agree." Shan Yuan's tone was domineering. "Besides, Wan Baiyun is the baby's other mother, and Wan Shiying can't make decisions."
After hearing this, Shan's mother hesitated for a moment but still entered the hospital room with the baby in her arms and asked Wan Baiyun, "Have you decided on the baby's name?"
Wan Baiyun nodded, "Let's call her Shan Le, and her nickname can be Le Le."
"Isn't it too casual?" Pan Yuan frowned. "This name sounds too common."
"Really?" Wan Baiyun awkwardly scratched her head. "It's the best I could come up with. Big brother, if Pan Pan is not satisfied when she wakes up, you can let her choose."
"Mom, can I take a photo of the baby?" Wan Baiyun made this request as she looked at the baby in Shan Pan's mother's arms.
"Of course." Shan Pan's mother nodded and carefully placed the baby in the crib.
Wan Baiyun opened her optical brain and took a photo of the baby, saving it for later.
After taking the photo, Wan Baiyun lowered her head and looked at Shan Pan resting on the bed, her eyes filled with reluctance.
Under Shan Pan's mother's gaze, Wan Baiyun simply leaned down and kissed the back of Pan Pan's hand before turning around and leaving with a lingering reluctance.
When Shan Pan woke up again, it was already noon. She touched her slightly smaller belly and turned to look at the hospital room, only to find that Wan Baiyun was no longer there.
Shan Pan thought of the words Wan Baiyun said during the labor, and a trace of disappointment flashed in her eyes.
She said she should wait for her, but how could she just leave right after giving birth?
After the sarcastic thoughts, Shan Pan's gaze fell on the crib by the hospital bed, and she called out, "Mom."
Shan Pan's mother woke up from her deep sleep, rubbed her eyes, and yawned as she approached, "Pan Pan, are you awake?"
"Yeah, Mom," Shan Pan nodded. "Where's the baby? I want to see the baby."
"Alright." Pan's mother smiled and walked to the crib. She carefully picked up the baby and placed her next to Shan Pan.
The baby was tiny, only the length of an adult's arm. Her freshly born face still had a hint of pink, her eyes tightly closed, and her little mouth was gently sucking. Although it was hard to tell what was cute about a newborn, Shan Pan found everything adorable.
"The baby looks just like you." Shan Pan's mother, who had witnessed her daughter's transformation from a teenager to a mother, looked at her with a gaze filled with tenderness. "You've worked hard."
"It's not hard." Pan Pan smiled, her eyes curved. She gently touched the small fist that her daughter tightly held and chuckled softly. "My daughter."
